    Palangkaraya is a city once was the capital of Central Kalimantan Province. The city has an area of 2678.51 km ² and a population of 220,223 inhabitants with an average population density of 62.89 people per km ² (the Indonesian Population Census 2010). Before regional autonomy in 2001, Palangkaraya has only 2 districts, namely: Pahandut and Bukit Batu. Now administratively, Palangkaraya consists of 5 districts, namely: Pahandut, Jekan Raya, Bukit Batu, Sebangau, and Rakumpit.

    The city was built in 1957 (Emergency Law No. 10/1957 on the Establishment of the First Level Autonomous Region of Central Kalimantan) of wilderness that is opened through the village on theedge Pahandut Kahajan . Palangkaraya is the city with the largest area in Indonesia. Some areas still forested, including protected forests, nature conservation and Protected Forest Tangkiling.

    With so many traffic jams in Jakarta, in late July and early August 2010, appeared several discourse to move the capital of Indonesia to Palangkaraya.

    A Brief History of Palangkaraya

    Establishment of Central Kalimantan Province through a long process that culminated on 23 May 1957 and confirmed by the Emergency Law No. 10 of 1957, namely on the Establishment of the First Level Autonomous Region of Central Kalimantan. Since then an official of Central Kalimantan Province as an autonomous region, as well as the anniversary of Central Kalimantan Province.

    The first pillar of development Palangkaraya done by the President of the Republic of Indonesia at the time, Sukarno on July 17, 1957 marked the inauguration of Monument / Monument capital city of Central Kalimantan Province in Pahandut which has a meaning:
    1. Number 17 symbolizes the wisdom of the Proclamation of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia.
    2. Monument Fire means a fire never goes out, the spirit of independence and build.
    3. There were 17 significant pillar of weapons for war.
    4. The monument symbolizes the Five Aspects of Pancasila implies belief in
    Almighty.

    Then based on Law Number 21 Year 1958 Capital of the Province which used to Pahandut changed its name to Palangkaraya.
