Bekasi | Bekasi City History

    Bekasi City
Bekasi (Indonesian:Kota Bekasi) is a city in West Java, Indonesia, located on the eastern border of Jakarta in the Jabodetabek metropolitan region. To the south is Bogor Regency, east is Bekasi Regency. It has an area of 210.49 km2 and 1,993,478 people in 2005, with a density of 9,471 people/km2. The 2007 population is estimated to be 2,084,831.

Substantial urban areas surround the city. It serves as a commuter city for Jakarta, although it has notable trade, business and processing industries. These are primarily clustered in the area of Karawang.

    Administration

Bekasi is divided into 12 subdistricts: West Bekasi, East Bekasi, South Bekasi, North Bekasi, Medan Satria, Rawalumbu, Bantar Gebang, Pondok Gede, Jatisampurna, Jatiasih, Pondok Melati and Mustika Jaya.

    Commerce

In recent years, many satellite cities have developed along the Jatibening/Cikunir - Tambun toll highway. These include Harapan Indah, Kemang Pratama, Taman Galaxy, and Grand Wisata.

There are several shopping centers in Bekasi. The largest is Mega Bekasi Hypermall (anchor tenant: Giant), Other shopping centers include: Metropolitan Mall. Grand Mall (anchor tenant: Hypermart), Blue Oasis City (anchor tenant: Carrefour), Bekasi Trade Centre, Bekasi Cyber Park (anchor tenant: Hari Hari Swalayan), and Bekasi Square (anchor tenant: Carrefour).

    Transportation

There are two highway connections from the Jabodetabek urban area. The first is the Jakarta–Cikampek Toll Road, which has four exits in Bekasi. The other is the Jakarta Outer Ring Road, which provides access to Tangerang, Jakarta, and Bogor. Owing to its location as a satellite city of Jakarta, heavy rush hour traffic jams have become common on the roads between Jakarta and Bekasi. Efforts have been made to overcome these problems, mainly by widening the roads between Sumber Arta market and Bekasi Cyber Park along the Kalimalang river. The most recent traffic project is the planned Becakayu toll road, which will be an alternate to the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road. Its route will be Bekasi Utara-Cawang-Kampung Melayu.

    Industry

In addition to its numerous residential areas, there are several important industrial areas in Bekasi. These include the Jababeka and MM 2100 districts. Many large companies, such as Honda, Converse and Samsung, have factories in Bekasi. Approximately 500,000 laborers live in Cikarang, the capital city of the Bekasi regency.
