Local residents advance to national competition

Leavenworth, Kan. — Two Leavenworth residents have qualified to compete this summer at the SkillsUSA national conference.

Brent Gersema will be competing at the high school level at the conference. He is a junior at Leavenworth High School. He qualified for nationals by finishing first at the state level in a computer internetworking competition.

Jim Simon will be competing at the college level. He is studying at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Technical Education Center. He finished first in the state in a SkillsUSA culinary arts competition.

SkillsUSA serves people preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, according to the organization’s website.

For his competition, Gersema said he had to build a computer internetworking system.

“I took a couple of hours to do,” he said.

He competed in the event April 12 in Hutchinson.

Teacher Linda Thompson said Leavenworth High School students swept the top three spots in the internetworking competition.

Junior C.J. Dopheide took second place, and junior Dorian Barnes finished in third place.

“It’s great they’re all three juniors so they’ll get to go again next year,” Thompson said.

She said this is the fourth straight year Leavenworth High School has swept the competition.

Simon competed in his state event March 31 in Johnson County. For the event, he had to prepare several items including a main entrée, soup and salad. And he was working against the clock.

“Each item had a different time limit,” he said.

Gersema and Simon now advance to the National Leadership and Skills Conference, which will be held next month in Kansas City, Mo.

Other Leavenworth High School students placed in state SkillsUSA events this year.

Teams from the high school finished fourth and fifth in a television production event. Ben Brungardt and Carlos Calderon were on the team that took fourth place. Kathleen Murphy and Lauren Rivera were on the team that finished in fifth place, according to teacher Jeff Baxter.

Joseph Singletary competed in architectural drafting event and finished 14th out of 47 students from the state, according to teacher Ruth Striggow.(source:leavenworthtimes.com)
